Why is water the first ingredient in most moisturizers?

Canadian Grace en Sep 11, 2026

Water is the first ingredient in most moisturizers because ingredient lists are ordered by weight, and water usually makes up 60 to 80 percent of a cream or lotion. It's doing real work in those formulas. It's also worth understanding what you're paying for.

What water does in a moisturizer

Water is a solvent. It dissolves the water-soluble ingredients in a formula, gives a cream its light, spreadable texture, and delivers the immediate cooling feel people associate with applying skincare. Plenty of excellent products are water-based, and there's nothing wrong with that.

What water doesn't do is stay on your skin. It evaporates within minutes of application. The hydration people describe after using a cream comes mostly from the humectants and occlusives suspended in that water, not the water itself.

What water requires you to add

This is the part that rarely gets explained. Once a formula contains water, it needs several other things to function.

It needs a preservative system, because water supports microbial growth. It needs emulsifiers, because oil and water separate on their own. Often it needs thickeners and stabilizers to hold the texture together over a two- or three-year shelf life.

None of these are sinister. They're the necessary consequence of putting water in a bottle. But they mean a water-based moisturizer is always a formulation, with a longer ingredient list, rather than an ingredient on its own.

What happens when you remove the water

An anhydrous product, meaning one with no water in it, doesn't need any of that. No water means no microbial growth to preserve against, nothing to emulsify, and no texture to stabilize. The formula can be the active material and nothing else.

That's the reasoning behind an oil-only approach. It isn't that water is bad. It's that removing it removes the reason to add six other things, and what's left is a shorter list you can actually read.

How to read your own shelf

Pick up whatever you're using now and look at the first ingredient. If it's Aqua or Water, you're holding a formulation that's mostly water by weight, and the ingredients after it are largely there to make that water behave.

Then look at how long the list is. That's the honest comparison, more useful than any claim on the front of the bottle.

The approach

Every Canadian Grace product is oil-only. No water, no fillers, no synthetic additives, no added fragrance. Sourced at origin, bottled in Canada.
