One of the most common questions we hear is whether you can use a face oil alongside your active ingredients, like retinol, vitamin C, or exfoliating acids. It is a great question, because the answer affects whether your routine works with you or against you. The short version: yes, you almost always can, and oil can even make actives gentler. Here is how to do it right.
Can you use face oil with retinol?
Yes, and it is often a very good idea. Retinol can be drying and irritating, especially at first, and a nourishing oil applied afterward helps buffer that, sealing in moisture and calming the skin. Apply your retinol first, let it absorb, then press your oil on top. If your skin is very sensitive, you can even apply oil before retinol to soften its impact while you build tolerance.
Can you use face oil with vitamin C?
Yes. Vitamin C is a water-based active that works best on clean skin, so apply it first and give it a minute to absorb, then layer your oil over the top to lock it in. They complement each other nicely, since vitamin C is an antioxidant and many oils are rich in antioxidants too. Just remember the golden rule of layering, which we will get to in a second.
Can you use face oil with exfoliating acids?
Yes, with a little care. Acids like glycolic or lactic acid need to sit on clean skin to do their job, so always apply them first and let them absorb before adding oil. Oil afterward helps soothe and replenish skin that exfoliation can leave feeling tight. If your skin is reacting, simply space them out, acids one night and oil-focused care another.
What is the golden rule of layering?
Thinnest to thickest, water before oil. Oil is the heaviest step and it seals everything beneath it, so it almost always goes last. If you apply oil before a water-based serum, the serum cannot get through. So the order is usually: cleanse, water-based actives like vitamin C or acids, then your oil to seal it all in. In the morning, sunscreen still goes on as the final protective layer.
Which oils layer best?
Lightweight oils are the easiest to slot into an active routine. Squalane is weightless and plays well with everything, and jojoba absorbs cleanly without feeling heavy over serums. Both are gentle enough to pair with stronger actives.
Used in the right order, a good oil does not fight your actives, it makes them more comfortable to use.
