How to use face oil so it actually absorbs (and never feels greasy)

Canadian Grace An Jun 14, 2026

If you have ever tried a face oil and ended up shiny an hour later, the oil probably was not the problem. The method was. Using oil well is genuinely simple once you know a few small things, and it makes all the difference between skin that feels soft and skin that feels slick.

Less is genuinely more

Two to three drops for your entire face. That is it. Oil is concentrated, so a little goes a very long way. If you pour out a full dropper, of course it is going to feel heavy.

Start small. You can always press in one more drop if your skin still feels thirsty. Skin can only absorb so much, and everything beyond that sits on the surface waiting to transfer onto your collar.

Apply to damp skin

This is the trick almost nobody gets told. Right after cleansing or a spritz of mist, while your skin is still slightly damp, press the oil in.

The reason is worth understanding, because it changes how you think about oils generally. Oils are not hydrating. They contain no water and they do not add any to your skin. What they do is slow the rate at which water already there evaporates out. So if you apply oil to a bone-dry face, you are sealing in dryness. Apply it over damp skin and you are sealing in the water.

That single distinction is the biggest fix for the greasy feeling, and it is why oil alone sometimes disappoints people with genuinely dehydrated skin. Give it something to hold onto.

Press, do not rub

Warm the drops between your palms first, then gently press them onto your face and neck. Pressing helps the oil sink in where you want it. Rubbing mostly just moves it around on the surface and drags at the skin while you do it.

Give it thirty seconds before you touch anything else. Most oils look shiny for the first minute and settle considerably after that, and a lot of people judge too early.

Match the oil to your skin

For oily or combination skin, reach for light, fast-absorbing oils like jojoba, squalane, or rosehip.

For dry or mature skin, richer oils like marula or argan give you more. If you are acne-prone, jojoba is a sensible starting point, because its structure sits closer to your skin's own sebum than most alternatives.

A rough rule: the lighter and faster-absorbing the oil, the less occlusion you get. That is a feature in July and a limitation in January. Plenty of people switch between two oils by season rather than looking for one that does everything.

Every one of these is in our range, each one pure and on its own, so you can build exactly what your skin needs.

Know where it goes in your routine

Oil goes last among your skincare steps, after any water-based serums, because its job is to seal in everything underneath it. Putting a water-based serum on top of oil largely wastes the serum.

Sunscreen is the exception to last. SPF needs to form an even film on the skin to protect at its rated level, so let your oil absorb for a few minutes and then apply sunscreen over the top. Mixing oil into your sunscreen, or layering it on top, can disrupt that film. If your mornings are rushed, using oil at night only is a perfectly reasonable choice.

In the evening, a slightly richer application lets it work while you sleep.

Where oil is not the answer

Oil seals; it does not hydrate. If your skin is tight and dehydrated rather than dry, you want something water-based underneath it, and oil alone will not get you there.

Oil is also not a treatment. It will not clear acne, fade pigmentation, or resurface texture. Those need actives, and an oil sits alongside them rather than replacing them.

Give it two weeks

Skin needs time to adjust to anything new. Most people who decide an oil did not work gave it about three days.

Give it two weeks of consistent, light use before you make up your mind, and change one thing at a time so you can tell what caused what. If you are testing for congestion specifically, run it on one area for two to three weeks rather than your whole face, since skin turnover takes about that long.

Common questions

Can I use oil under makeup? Yes, with time. Let it settle for five minutes, use less than usual, and foundation sits fine over the top. Rushing it is what causes patchiness.

Morning, night, or both? Night is where oils do their most useful work. Morning is optional and depends on how your skin behaves under sunscreen.

My skin feels oily but tight. What do I use? That is usually dehydration rather than dryness. Something water-based first, then a light oil over the top.

Can I mix two oils? Yes, and it is a good way to adjust richness. Press in one drop of a heavier oil over a lighter base rather than blending in the bottle.

How long does a bottle last? At two to three drops nightly, most people get several months from 30ml. That is also why storage matters more than people expect.

Used the right way, a good oil absorbs cleanly and leaves your skin soft, never slick. Still nervous that oils are greasy or will break you out? We answer that honestly too. And if you would like help choosing your first one, the full range is organised by skin type and concern.
