The 'Slugging' Trend But Make It Natural: Oil Edition

by Canadian Grace < 29 Jul 2025

If you've been on skincare TikTok lately, you've probably heard of "slugging." It's the trend where you seal in your nighttime skincare routine with a thick layer of something occlusive-usually petroleum jelly-for intense overnight hydration.

People swear by it. They wake up with plump, dewy, glass-like skin. But there’s one problem. Most slugging routines use petroleum-based products like Vaseline or Aquaphor, and I wanted something a little more natural. That’s when I started experimenting with oils.

And honestly? I might never go back.

What is Slugging, Really?

The idea behind slugging is simple. By creating a barrier on top of your skin, you trap moisture and allow your skincare products to work more effectively overnight. The results can be amazing-hydrated, soothed, glowing skin by morning.

But petroleum jelly isn’t for everyone. It can feel heavy, block pores, and isn’t the most sustainable ingredient out there. I wanted the benefits without the synthetic base.

Why I Switched to Natural Oils

There were a few reasons I wanted to ditch the Vaseline:

  • I prefer knowing exactly what’s in my products.

  • Natural oils offer added skincare benefits—not just a barrier.

  • They're renewable and environmentally friendlier.

  • My skin tends to react better to lightweight, plant-based ingredients.

My Natural Oil Slugging Routine

Here’s how I do it:

Step 1: Evening Skincare First
I cleanse, tone, and apply any serums or light moisturizers—just like normal.

Step 2: Choose the Right Oil

  • For normal or oily skin: I use 3–4 drops of jojoba oil.

  • For dry or mature skin: I go for 4–5 drops of argan oil.

  • For extra glow: I mix in a bit of rosehip oil once or twice a week.

Step 3: Warm It Up
I rub the oil between my palms and gently press it into my face. No rubbing, just pressing.

Step 4: Sleep on Silk
To keep things clean and friction-free, I sleep on a silk pillowcase. Game changer.

Why Natural Oils Work (Maybe Even Better)

Jojoba oil is technically a wax ester, meaning it closely resembles the skin’s natural sebum. It absorbs beautifully without clogging pores and helps balance oil production.

Argan oil is rich in vitamin E and fatty acids that deeply nourish while reinforcing the skin barrier.

The result? You get all the benefits of traditional slugging, with the added perks of real skincare nutrients that support long-term skin health.

What I Noticed

After just one night:

  • My skin felt instantly softer and looked brighter

  • I had less flakiness, even in dry weather

  • My makeup went on smoother in the morning

After a few weeks:

  • My skin tone evened out

  • Fine lines around my mouth and eyes looked softer

  • My skin felt more resilient overall

Tips if You’re New to Natural Slugging

  • Start with just a few drops. You can always add more.

  • Apply oils on damp skin-it helps with absorption.

  • Use high-quality, cold-pressed oils.

  • Avoid coconut oil unless you know your skin loves it (it's comedogenic for some).

  • Don’t rush to the pillow-wait 20-30 minutes before bed so the oil has time to sink in.

Who Should Try It?

Natural oil slugging is great for:

  • People with dry, dehydrated, or mature skin

  • Anyone avoiding petroleum or synthetic products

  • Those looking to simplify and clean up their routine

  • People who want skincare to feel like self-care

A Few Cautions

If you have acne-prone skin, start slow and patch test first. Also, if you're using strong actives like tretinoin, check with your dermatologist-oils might interfere with absorption.

The Sustainable Choice

This routine is not only effective, it's affordable and eco-conscious. A single bottle of jojoba or argan oil lasts months and has far less packaging and environmental impact than conventional products.

Final Thoughts

Slugging with natural oils has completely transformed my night routine. It’s gentle, nourishing, and gives me real results without any synthetic shortcuts.

If you’re curious about slugging but want a cleaner, more natural approach, give it a shot. Sometimes the best beauty upgrades are the ones that bring us back to the basics.
