How to use face oil so it actually absorbs (and never feels greasy)

Canadian Grace on Jun 14, 2026

If you have ever tried a face oil and ended up shiny an hour later, the oil probably was not the problem. The method was. Using oil well is genuinely simple once you know a few small things, and it makes all the difference between skin that feels soft and skin that feels slick.

Less is genuinely more

Two to three drops for your entire face. That is it. Oil is concentrated, so a little goes a very long way. If you pour out a full dropper, of course it is going to feel heavy. Start small. You can always press in one more drop if your skin still feels thirsty.

Apply to damp skin

This is the trick almost nobody gets told. Right after cleansing or a spritz of mist, while your skin is still slightly damp, press the oil in. That little bit of water helps the oil spread and absorb instead of sitting on top. It is the single biggest fix for the greasy feeling.

Press, don't rub

Warm the drops between your palms first, then gently press them onto your face and neck. Pressing helps the oil sink in where you want it. Rubbing mostly just moves it around on the surface.

Match the oil to your skin

For oily or combination skin, reach for light, fast-absorbing oils like jojoba, squalane, or rosehip. For dry or mature skin, richer oils like marula or argan give you more. If you are acne-prone, jojoba is your friend, because it so closely mimics your skin's own sebum. Every one of these is in our range, each one pure and on its own, so you can build exactly what your skin needs.

Know where it goes in your routine

Oil goes last, after any water-based serums, because its job is to seal in everything underneath it. In the morning, a drop or two layers beautifully under sunscreen. In the evening, a slightly richer application lets it work while you sleep.

Give it two weeks

Skin needs time to adjust to anything new. Most people who decide an oil "did not work" gave it about three days. Give it two weeks of consistent, light use before you make up your mind. That is usually right when people fall in love with it.

Used the right way, a good oil absorbs cleanly and leaves your skin soft, never slick. Still nervous that oils are greasy or will break you out? We answer that honestly too. And if you would like help choosing your first one, the guide at canadiangrace.ca walks you through it by skin type and concern.
